10 Natural Ingredients that Repel Mosquitoes

Coconut Oil and Peppermint Oil

You Will Need

  • 30 mL of coconut oil
  • 12 drops of peppermint oil

What You Have To Do

  1. Mix both oils 
  2. Apply the mixture directly to the exposed areas of your body before you step out.

Why does this work?

Peppermint Oil contains compounds like menthol and limonene that works well in repelling mosquitoes. Combining it with coconut oil enhances its potential and makes it your very own homemade mosquito repellent.

Coconut Oil and Neem Oil

You Will Need

  • 30 mL of coconut oil
  • 10 drops of neem oil

What You Have To Do

  1. Mix both oils

Neem oil is believed to be a natural mosquito repellent due to its strong aroma and composition. When used in combination with coconut oil, it protected against mosquitoes.

Lavender Oil, Vanilla and Lemon Juice

You Will Need

  • 3-4 tbsp of vanilla extract
  • 10-12 drops of lavender oil
  • 3-4 tbsp of lemon juice
  • 1-2 cups of water

What You Have To Do

  1. Mix vanilla extract, lavender oil and lemon juice; add water to the mixture. 
  2. Pour the solution in the spray bottle and shake well before applying it on your body parts.

Why does this work?

Vanilla has natural mosquito-repelling properties, while lemon juice has high acid content that helps repel mosquitoes naturally. Lavender oil contains compounds like camphor, linalool, limonene and eucalyptol, which are known to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Rubbing Alcohol Spray

You Will Need

  • 1 tbsp of alcohol
  • 30 mL of water
  • 10 drops of any essential oil

What You Have To Do

  1. Mix vanilla extract, lavender oil and lemon juice; add water to the mixture. 
  2. Mix well. Shake the solution before applying it on your body parts.

Why does this work?

The repellency potential of essential oil is more when mixed with rubbing alcohol (as it dissolves oil better than water). The solution of rubbing alcohol with vegetable oil is used to kill bugs and insects, too. Hence, you can use this trick to make a homemade insect spray.

Garlic Spray

You Will Need

  • 4-5 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp of mineral oil
  • 2 cups of water

What You Have To Do

  1. Chop up garlic cloves and add mineral oil to it.
  2. Soak overnight and strain the garlic.
  3. Add water and lemon juice to the infused oil.
  4. Spray it on the exposed body parts. You can also spray the solution on your plants in and around your home or office.

Cloves with Lemon

You Will Need

  • 1 lemon
  • 12-14 cloves

  1. Cut the lemon in half and insert cloves into each of the half pieces. 
  2. Place this in your room or garden.

The presence of eugenol and strong aroma is quite effective in repelling insects and mosquitoes. 

Cinnamon Oil Repellent

You Will Need

  • 8-10 drops of cinnamon oil
  • 30 mL of water

Why does this work?

Anethole, Cinnamyl Acetate, Cinnamaldehyde and Eugenol are the four components present in the cinnamon oil. They have the strongest mosquito repelling properties against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

Baking Soda with Vinegar

You Will Need

  • ¼ cup of baking soda
  • Half to one cup of vinegar

What You Have To Do

  1. Take an empty bottle and cut it into half.
  2. Add baking soda to the bottom part of the bottle.
  3. Take the top part of the bottle and invert it so that it looks like a funnel.
  4. Place the inverted half of the bottle on top of the bottom half.
  5. Pour vinegar into this and place it outside your room.

Why does this work?

The reaction between vinegar and baking soda releases carbon dioxide and CO2 attracts mosquitoes. Therefore, it can be used as a trap to kill them.

Lemongrass Oil and Rosemary Essential Oil

You Will Need

  • 10 drops of lemongrass oil
  • 8-10 drops of rosemary oil
  • 50-60 mL of jojoba, olive or coconut oil (carrier oil)

What You Have To Do

  1. Mix the essential oils with the carrier oil.
  2. Apply the mixture directly on your exposed body parts.

Why does this work?

Rosemary oil contains compounds like camphor, eucalyptol and limonene in it; while lemongrass oil contains citronella and limonene that are amazingly effective in repelling mosquitoes.

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

You Will Need

  • 90-100 mL of olive or coconut oil (carrier oil)
  • 10 mL of lemon eucalyptus oil

  1. Mix the essential oils with the carrier oil.
  2. Apply the mixture directly on your exposed body parts before stepping out.

Why does this work?

Lemon eucalyptus oil contains compounds like citronellal and p-methane 3,8-diol (PMD). While citronellal is believed to show a little repellency against mosquitoes, PMD is highly effective against these tiny creatures.
